Sam is a self-taught artist who specialises in depicting the landscape in quick, expressive oils and charcoals. He works outside or in his studio and makes his own frames.

Sam likes his paintings to be evocative of weather, seasons, of the feeling and poetry of the countryside. They are explorations in colour, texture, and pattern. And usually start from a small idea in the form of a sketch or a memory of a certain place, but then tend to take on a life of their own, which Sam is directing rather than fully controlling.
