Winding Light
Emma Jelf
21 - 29 November 2025
Emma’s recent body of work, Winding Light, is inspired by the local landscape and the transformative effect of sunlight — how it shapes colour, energy, and mood in both nature and ourselves.
A central theme is the metaphor of a path or lane: twisting and turning through the countryside, never knowing what lies around the next corner. A reflection of our restless times — always on the move — her paintings offer a counterpoint: they invite us to pause and notice the quiet harmony of nature, the interplay between sun-drenched spaces and deep shadows.
Emma combines plein air painting, photography and working in her home studio, capturing fleeting moments of light and movement. Her understanding of aesthetic values, combined with intuition, guides each carefully considered and expressive composition. She meticulously mixes colour from a limited palette to recreate the hues she observes — a process that lies at the heart of her practice and gives her paintings their distinctive luminosity and balance. Her brushwork ranges from calm and deliberate to energetic and spontaneous, reflecting the rhythm and vitality of the landscape.
Through her work, Emma seeks to evoke reflection, optimism, and calm — an invitation to slow down and reconnect with the beauty of the world around us.
