Alchemy in Layers
21 March - 29 March
Becky Borthwick is a Marlborough-based artist whose innate love and affinity with the outdoors, nature, animals and the change in seasons has led her to the tangible artwork of textile stitched collage and sculpture.
Alchemy in Layers is a body of work that Becky has created in celebration of the natural world. Becky prepares linen and muslin with pigments bound by soya milk, a technique that means the fabric needs to cure for four weeks. The waiting time allows Becky to choose a focus for each piece, taking inspiration from her beloved countryside. The alchemy of the process gives Becky the freedom to experiment, to see the outcomes of individual works, and the new direction that can result from the curing process.
“My art is rooted in the changing landscape around me – the ebb and flow of the seasons, each with its own beauty. The natural rhythms and movements suggest the form and structure of a piece, to which I may add trees, and lines of the earth that have been eroded or from the path of a tractor over time…capturing the essence and stunning beauty of Wiltshire, with its rolling down, vales, trees and ancient places.”
