Emma Jelf
Visual Artist
Emma has been drawing and painting since childhood. Her earliest inspiration came from her grandmother — also a landscape painter — and a formative encounter with Willem de Kooning’s work as a teenager, which opened her eyes to the boundless possibilities of painting.
After an Art Foundation in Bath and a Fine Art degree in Newcastle, Emma worked for interior designer and colour visionary Tricia Guild, followed by several contemporary art galleries in London. These experiences — along with a year living in Australia — deepened her appreciation for the aesthetics of the visual world and the richness of artistic expression.
Emma began her career as a mural painter, creating uplifting trompe-l’oeil scenes for spaces including the Burns Unit at Odstock Hospital, a Covent Garden nightclub, an indoor pool and several schools. After a forced pause due to injury, she transitioned into teaching, becoming Head of Art at a London prep school. Teaching reawakened her practice and renewed her appreciation for the raw, fearless approach of children facing a blank canvas.
Having returned to Wiltshire to raise her family, Emma has worked as a full-time artist for the past six years, developing her own practice alongside commissions. In 2022, she exhibited in Roots, a duo show at Gallery 475, London, which sold out. She continues to run art clubs and well-being workshops, celebrating the restorative power of creativity.
Emma's forthcoming solo show 'Winding Light' runs from 20-29 November 2025.
